Mulligan Bros. Ltd
Three brothers – Ernie, Robert, and Reggie, officially founded Mulligan Bros. Ltd. in 1972. Their father, Harold Mulligan, had farmed potatoes as a child along with his father Martin Mulligan since 1920.
Harold formed his own entity in 1944 in Middleton, PEI and later moved the operation to another location in Middleton. “I have a sneaking suspicion it was due to electricity,” Robert Mulligan told us. “They didn’t have power lines at the old location until 1956.”
The boys worked with their father and finally established their own potato operation in Kinkora, PEI in 1972. Today they farm 1200 acres of potatoes, hay, and barley. Mulligan Bros. Inc. now service potatoes to the fresh and processing markets.
Working with them today, is Mulligan’s 4th generation potato farmer – Darcy Mulligan, the son of Reggie. Darcy will one day take over the family business.
As a couple of side businesses they have a small beef cattle farm that is made up of 75 cattle, and a small trucking business that services Mid Isle Farms and other businesses on the Island.
As the first employee of Mid Isle Farms, Robert was the comptroller of Mid Isle Farms from 1982 up until his retirement in 2005. |
