John H. MacKay & Son Ltd.
In 1928, George and Muriel, John H. MacKay’s mother and father, had acquired a mixed farm operation located in Albany, PEI . After John received his discharge from the R.C.A.F. in 1945, he and his wife, Roma, took over the family farm focusing on potatoes.
His son, Harleigh, had always been the helping hand on the farm and had just graduated from Nova Scotia Agriculture College. It was only natural that they founded John H. MacKay & Son Ltd. in 1975.
They grew 300 acres of potatoes and serviced the Table market. John H. MacKay & Son Ltd. was one of the first operations that grew, packaged, and hauled their own potatoes.
They were also one of the first operations that introduced the concept of the loading dock to the potato warehouses in the industry.
As the industry evolved the MacKay’s focused more on hauling potatoes and operating as a dealer. As more time passed they decided to offer up the farm in 1985. |
